Chinese Temple Tiles

When visiting China, you will be readily amazed with the spectacular roofs that adorn heritage structures. Glazed Roof Tiles have been used in China since the Zhou Dynasty and have been an integral element to oriental architectural design. They are featured prominently in historic buildings such as the Temple of Heaven and of those in the Forbidden City. Kawara’s Chinese Temple Tile series is an authentic replication of ornate Chinese roofs. Horizontal wave-like roof tiles and vertical round “bamboo” ridges are coupled with symbolically-designed eave tiles to form essential elements of Chinese architecture.
